Balancing Opportunity and Uncertainty: Indian IT Professionals in the UK
This report examines the experiences of migrant workers in the UK IT industry, revealing a curious tension: while many benefit from flexible work arrangements, international exposure, and opportunities for skill development, these advantages coexist with significant personal and professional uncertainties tied to visa regulations. Migrants navigate short-term assignments, frequent renewals, complex taxation, and limited access to entitlements, creating stress, disruption to family life, and challenges in longterm planning, disproportionately affecting women through constraints on reproductive planning and spousal employment. The report’s findings highlight this nuanced balance: employees enjoy better work-life balance and career opportunities, yet face precarious tenure, salary disparities, and constraints on family formation and spousal employment. Key recommendations include creating new visa arrangements, ensuring fairer pay and benefits, supporting spousal employment, simplifying tax arrangements, and providing clearer pathways to settlement. By addressing these tensions, policy reforms can better align corporate mobility needs with employee well-being and family stability.
